Developing my Art Business

My first Art Fair in Penarth in 2022

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I’ve had a varied career as a filmmaker and animator, and working in the arts and wellbeing sector with schools, charities, and the NHS.

Throughout that time,  I’ve continued to paint, and I’ve now put my focus on selling my artwork. My efforts at selling my work had been a bit stop start in previous years, so I knew I needed to double down and put some effort into creating a sustainable business. I suppose I’m a typical artist: I love creating work, but I’m less enthusiastic about everything involved in setting up a business. I struggle with organisation and sticking to a plan, as I’m easily distracted by something far more interesting—such as starting another painting! Fortunately, help has been at hand. I’ve been working with Louise Davidson, a professional organiser who has been amazing at helping me get up and running. It has taken a while, but I’m now at the point where I can sell work through my website. I’ve also had help from Howl, who has worked on the website.

As a neurodivergent person, I recognise that I struggle with time management and with categorising and prioritising tasks. In a gentle and patient way, Louise untangled my rather random systems and created an art archive. Working out the right types and sizes of packaging, as well as the costs, was another task that took some time. As a filmmaker, I find it easier to organise my work. Producing a film follows a structured process and involves working towards a clear deadline. Once it’s finished, I can move on to another interesting project. Setting up a website and running a business feel much harder because there is no definite end point—things are always developing. The work also involves lots of small, uninteresting tasks that require decisions and administrative skills, none of which does much for my dopamine levels!

Although it still feels somewhat daunting, I’m on track to sell my work. With Louise’s help, I’ve produced cards and giclée prints of some of my original artwork. She also suggests ideas for social media posts and sends me a monthly to-do list, which is really helpful, even if I don’t always complete everything—usually the case! Although it has taken a while, I don’t think I would be posting on Instagram or have come this far without the support I’ve received.
