About

Jane Hubbard is a Cardiff-based painter inspired by the interwoven histories and present-day stories of people, landscape, and place. Drawn to beauty in both the mundane and the sublime, her work is a paradoxical evocation of playfulness and raw spirit, teeming with passing moods and atmosphere. Her paintings capture urban sprawls, beaches, landscapes, and florals, rendered in an expressive, sometimes naïve, and colourful style.

Jane mainly works in oils, acrylics, watercolour, and pastel. She has an intuitive approach to painting, layering loose brushstrokes and becoming fully absorbed in the process, responding instinctively to colour, texture, and mark-making. She paints en plein air, from life, and from photographs or sketches. She works from a small, modestly disorganised garden studio in Cardiff, usually accompanied by one of her four cats. Her influences include artists such as Edward Hopper and Paul Cézanne, as well as the bold use of colour and emotional expression found in Fauvism and Expressionism.

Jane began her painting career in the 1980s after completing a Fine Art degree at Cardiff Art School. She has exhibited at venues across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, including Chapter Arts Centre, Turner House Gallery, and Llanover Hall Arts Centre. She later built a successful career in filmmaking, winning multiple awards, including a BAFTA Cymru for animation. Over the past two years, she has returned her focus to painting and is currently developing new work, exploring fresh themes and styles, and expanding opportunities to exhibit and sell her art.
